Pierre Huyghe and Humanity in the Age of AI
The de Young MuseumIn October 2018 I covered the premiere of Pierre Huyghe’s UUmwelt︎︎︎—an environmental installation exploring a symbiosis between organic and artificial intelligences—at Serpentine Galleries in London for The Brooklyn Rail.
After reading the article, Claudia Schmuckli, Curator-in-Charge of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, invited me to write about Huyghe’s earlier sculpture Exomind (Deep Water)︎︎︎, which The M. H. de Young Memorial Museum acquired for its landmark exhibition Uncanny Valley: Being Human in the Age of AI︎︎︎.
Although independent texts, each essay explores themes connecting Huyghe’s different bodies of work. I consider them companion pieces.
